KCB Rugby Clinch Floodlit Tournament Title

Impala Floodlit Trophy

The defending Impala Floodlight champions KCB RFC made tournament history by winning the title four times in a row, their first time, after defeating the tenacious Nondescript side 20-3 in a thoroughly exciting final played at the Impala Club.

The Bankers now have nine championships, the same as Mean Machine, which in the early 1990s completed a four-peat with KCB also completing the feat.

After closely contested victories over Kenya Harlequin in the quarterfinals (14-10), and Kenyatta University's Blak Blad in the semifinals (14-3), KCB earned a spot in the championship game.

Nondies, on the other hand, had a remarkable journey to the championship game after thrashing Impala Saracens 33-7 in the first round and defeating Menengai Oilers 16-11 in the semifinals.

After Kenya Simba's humiliating loss in the 2023 Rugby World Cup qualifiers, which ended the nation's aspirations of competing in the international tournament, both teams wanted to charge the big crowd of supporters who had packed Impala Club to the rafters and also treat the spectators to an exciting game.

In the first ten minutes, KCB took the initiative to score, and Ian Njoroge split the uprights to give the Bankers a 3-0 advantage.

As the tenacious Nondies defense stayed strong against everything that was thrown at them, Curtis Olago's team nearly scored the game's opening try but coughed up the ball twice.

Nondies made an attempt to score but missed a penalty that would have tied the score and also failed to connect on a drop kick that just missed the target as KCB led 3-0 at halftime.

After Calvin Shuenda missed the first penalty, Callum Oliver's team came out strong in the second half and tied the score on Ben Salem's kick.

The Nondies' three points roused KCB, who first kicked a penalty to take the lead and then scored a try that Njoroge converted for a 13-3 advantage.

The current tournament winners, who camped on the Nondies five-meter line with some persistent pressure only had time for one more try in the closing moments of the game to earn a 20-3 victory.
